India’s Foreign Minister Defends Russian Oil Imports Amid U.S. Sanctions.
Remarks by India’s Foreign Minister
According to Espreso.tv: India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has addressed the country’s purchases of Russian oil, stating that these decisions are driven by economic considerations rather than political ideology. He pointed out that India has emerged as the largest buyer of Russian crude, a development occurring against the backdrop of the United States urging India to acquire this oil.
Jaishankar emphasized that oil import choices are guided by 'cost and availability.' He further stated,
“let’s not pretend there’s some great principle involved here”(S. Jaishankar), hinting at the complexities of international relations. The minister noted that
“circumstances have pushed us in a certain direction”(S. Jaishankar), reflecting India’s pragmatic stance on the matter.
Ambiguity in India-Russia Relations
It is worth noting that in May 2023, India turned down a Russian offer to purchase liquefied natural gas, highlighting the nuanced nature of bilateral ties amid shifting foreign policy dynamics.
This situation underscores India’s pragmatic approach to foreign policy, where economic interests often outweigh political principles. Amid global energy instability, India—one of the world’s largest energy consumers—continues to seek favorable terms to meet its energy needs, a strategy that could affect its relationships with other nations, particularly the United States and Russia. At the same time, the decision to reject the liquefied natural gas deal signals the complexity of India-Russia relations and potential changes in their future cooperation.
