OSCE Chair Visits Kyiv, Calls for Organization's Role in Ending the War.
OSCE Chair's Visit to Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: On February 2, 2023, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Ignazio Cassis visited Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. This marked Cassis's fifth visit to Ukraine, but his first in his capacity as OSCE Chair. During the visit, a ceremony was held to lay flowers at the Wall of Remembrance for fallen Ukrainian defenders, which was also attended by OSCE Secretary General Feridun Sinirlioğlu.
The Imperative for Peace Support
Ignazio Cassis stressed the critical role of the OSCE as a platform for dialogue and expressed the organization's readiness to support efforts aimed at achieving a just and durable peace, in line with international law and the Helsinki Principles. He stated that the war must end and that a solution must be found, a process in which the OSCE should assist. The visit underscores the international community's sustained focus on the region and the vital importance of diplomatic engagement in conflict resolution. The OSCE, a key regional security body, has faced significant challenges in its role since the full-scale invasion began. Cassis's participation in the memorial ceremony acknowledges the human cost of the conflict and signals support for Ukraine's pursuit of peace, potentially marking a step toward renewed diplomatic efforts for regional stability and security.
