Buckwheat Prices Surge Toward 50 Hryvnia Per Kilogram in Ukraine.
Rising Cost of Buckwheat in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Prices for buckwheat groats in Ukraine have been climbing steadily since the start of 2025. By December 2025, the cost had reached 44.9 UAH per kilogram, up from 42.5 UAH in November of that year. The upward trend has continued into 2026, with the average price hitting 50.1 UAH per kilogram by February 17, 2026, a significant jump from 46.1 UAH on January 17, 2026. Buckwheat is a staple grain in Eastern European diets, making these price increases particularly impactful for Ukrainian households.
The price acceleration for buckwheat has nearly doubled at the start of 2026. From January 17 to February 17, 2026, the cost rose by 4 UAH, representing an increase of approximately 9%. Over the course of 2025, buckwheat became almost 28% more expensive. This surge is part of a broader inflationary trend, with overall consumer prices in Ukraine rising 0.7% in January 2026 and 7.4% year-on-year. In various retail chains, buckwheat now sells for at least 48 UAH.
Key Drivers Behind the Price Hike
The primary factors contributing to the price increase are:
- moderate increases in the cost of grain crops;
- adverse weather conditions;
- seasonal market fluctuations;
- the overall level of the harvest yield.
These combined factors continue to exert pressure on the buckwheat market, forcing consumers to adjust to new pricing realities.
"The rising cost of buckwheat in Ukraine mirrors broader trends in the food market, which can be linked to various economic and environmental factors."
The increasing expense of this essential food item could dampen consumer demand and push people to seek alternatives, potentially altering consumption patterns across the country. Analysts stress the need for close monitoring of the situation, as further shifts in pricing policy may significantly strain household budgets.
