Greek Island Pays €500 per Month to Move: Program Details.
According to inkorr.com: Financial Incentives for Moving to a Remote Island
The island of Antikythera, located in the Aegean Sea, offers generous financial incentives for families willing to relocate here. This initiative aims to revive the local community, as its population has sharply declined. During peak season, only about 65 people live on this beautiful Greek island, of which only 24 are permanent residents.
Financial Stimuli from the Greek Orthodox Church
The Greek Orthodox Church has taken the initiative to implement payout programs to revive the Antikythera community. New residents will receive €500 (around £415) every month for three years after relocating. The total payout can reach up to €18,000 (around £15,000). Over the last 40 years, the population of Antikythera has decreased from approximately 300 to the current low figures as young people leave the island in search of jobs and better living conditions. This financial incentive program aims to change this trend.
By the way, Greek doctors have started a 48-hour strike, demanding higher wages and better staffing for the country's healthcare system.
The island of Antikythera encourages new residents with financial payouts, aiming to halt the population decline. The Greek Orthodox Church will provide new residents with €500 per month for three years, hoping this will stimulate an increase in the number of residents and invigorate the community.
This initiative is becoming increasingly relevant amid instability in other regions of Greece, where young people often choose to live in cities, leaving rural communities unattended. Reviving the population of Antikythera may serve as an example for other small islands and villages facing similar challenges.
