A Teacher and a Veteran: The Volunteer Defenders of Kharkiv.
The Battle for Kharkiv
According to UATV: Kharkiv was among the first Ukrainian cities to come under attack when Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. In the face of this assault, countless Ukrainians stepped forward to defend their nation, including volunteers like Serhiy Bystrov and Andriy Batynskyi. Their courage and resolve in the fight for Kharkiv exemplify the spirit of Ukrainian resistance. The city's defense became a crucial early chapter in the war, holding back a major offensive on a key urban center.
Serhiy Bystrov, a soldier with the call sign 'Serho', had previously fought in the battle for Savur-Mohyla and served in the 'Kraken' unit. Until May 2022, he was actively defending Kharkiv, where he and his comrades successfully organized resistance against the aggressor. Serhiy recalls:
'There were those I could count on, guys I knew, who I had fought with before. We all gathered there quickly.' - Serhiy Bystrov
This highlights the critical importance of trust and cohesion among soldiers during such pivotal moments.
Andriy Batynskyi, originally from Vovchansk, was a history teacher and the director of Vovchansk Gymnasium No. 1 before the war began. When the aggression started, he decided to take up arms and fight for his country. Andriy notes:
'When I saw the flashes in the morning and the shelling of the city began, I understood—this is war! I could not have acted otherwise. I taught children to love Ukraine and to stand up for it when the time came, so this was the only way! I chose this path for myself and went as a volunteer.' - Andriy Batynskyi
He fought in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions and served on the Zaporizhzhia front until the end of 2024.
Serhiy Bystrov concluded his service and was demobilized in 2025. The contributions of both he and Andriy to the defense of Kharkiv and other Ukrainian regions stand as a powerful testament to the heroism and dedication of Ukraine's defenders. This ongoing struggle leaves a profound mark on the nation's memory and calls for unity in the face of the immense challenges confronting the country.
The Role of Volunteers in National Security
The defense of Kharkiv and other cities during the war has been critically important for Ukraine's national security. The contributions of volunteers like Serhiy and Andriy underscore not only personal bravery but also the collective determination of Ukrainians in the face of aggression. Their experience serves as powerful evidence of the importance of patriotism and the readiness to fight for independence, setting an example for future generations in the struggle for freedom and justice.
