Croatia Rejects Hungarian and Slovakian Request to Ship Russian Oil via Adria Pipeline.
Croatia Declines to Transport Russian Crude
According to UATV: Croatia has turned down a request from Hungary and Slovakia to use the Adria pipeline for transporting Russian oil. Croatian Economy Minister Ante Šušnjar stated that while the country is willing to assist in addressing fuel shortages, it will only do so in strict compliance with European Union legislation.
Croatia's Stance on Energy Independence
On February 15, Hungary and Slovakia formally approached Croatia seeking to move Russian oil through the pipeline. However, the Croatian government decided against approving this request. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković has instead proposed using the Adria pipeline for oil supplies from sources other than the Russian Federation.
'The Adria pipeline is ready, so there are no longer any technical justifications for any EU country to remain tied to Russian crude oil.' Ante Šušnjar
This decision underscores a growing trend among EU nations to reduce their reliance on Russian energy resources. It comes as the bloc continues to implement sanctions and seek alternatives following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The refusal could significantly impact regional energy strategy, potentially forcing the requesting nations to seek alternative energy sources or adapt their policies to the new reality.
By taking this position, Croatia not only aligns with broader European policy but also strengthens its role as a key player in the Balkan region's energy sector.
