Arrival of 38 Migrants in Portugal

According to The Sun: There was joy and excitement on a closed beach in Algarve as an old boat with 38 migrants docked on the shore during sunset.

However, their delight was short-lived, as Portuguese authorities quickly reacted, seeking to prevent the country from becoming a new gateway to Europe.

Quick Reaction from Authorities

Senior officials in Portugal emphasized that their message to those planning to cross borders illegally is simple – don’t come here, or you will be detained and deported.

Politicians and law enforcement representatives stated that they want to 'send a message' to potential migrants, warning of the consequences of inaction that could provoke 'anger' among local populations.

Portugal aims to avoid the chaos with migrants that has impacted Britain and other European countries.

Among the new strict measures are deportations, new detention centers, and 18,000 illegal migrants waiting for expulsion. This is happening in a country that welcomes 300,000 British tourists annually.

It seems that Portugal's strict measures are indeed effectively shutting the door on illegal migration: since 2019, only eight migrants have arrived by boat.

In contrast, Britain has recorded over 190,000 migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats since 2018.

Strict Migration Control

The total number of migrants in Portugal has also drastically decreased – from a net increase of 63,000 in 2019 to fewer than 21,000 in 2024.

This year, the country has further tightened measures to prevent potential spikes in migration.

The Algarve region is regarded as a 'gateway to Europe', as it is only 700 km from Morocco. This route could quickly become lucrative for smugglers.

Portugal intends to eradicate any possibility of escalation regarding illegal migration problems.

“Portugal aims to prevent these arrivals from becoming regular routes by ensuring swift processing of each case according to existing legislation while guaranteeing respect for human rights.”

After receiving assistance, the migrants were relocated to temporary centers in Porto, Lisbon, and Faro.

The court ordered them to return to Morocco voluntarily within 20 days or face forced deportation within 60 days.

Residents' Reaction

Local entrepreneur Paulo Lourenço, who was on his way home when he noticed the approaching boat, shared his impressions:

“It felt like an invasion.”

Paulo noted that the migrants were asking him for help to contact their families, which he believes indicates their desire to connect with loved ones.

Major General Jorge Ludovika Bolas emphasized that the national guard acted “efficiently,” managing to detain the migrants before they could disperse.

The Issue of Illegal Immigration

António Leitão Amaro highlighted the government's firm actions regarding illegal migration and increased control.

The government also announced the construction of two new detention centers as the national capacity is extremely limited.

Despite strict measures, local residents living near Vila do Bispo have divided opinions.

Two women who were on the beach during the boat's arrival expressed sympathy for the migrants, noting that the situation is 'sad'.

Protests against the UK’s migrant processing policy are taking place.

The UK government is trying to take steps to address the issue of illegal immigration, yet pressure on the asylum system remains very high.
