K-Pop Demon Hunters by Netflix: How Animation Became a Global Phenomenon.
The Success of KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix
According to Vox: The film KPop Demon Hunters has become the most popular movie in Netflix history. This success in 2025 surpasses even the popularity of animated films.
Musical Success
The main reason for this triumph is the music: it is the first soundtrack to have four songs in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, with the single “Golden” holding the top spot for several weeks. Bright compositions with distinctive production and memorable melodies showcase all the allure of K-pop.
The Movie's Plot
The story revolves around a female trio, Huntr/x, who adore their fans and delicious ramen. But the girls have a secret: they live a double life, saving the world from demons through music. Their path is blocked by The Saja Boys — demons who disguise themselves as a boy band and entertain their fans with energetic pop compositions, trying to thwart Huntr/x's mission.
This concept did not impress Sony, the company that created the film, but ultimately the distribution rights were transferred to Netflix.
Cultural Significance
One of the reasons why the film became so special is its tribute to the status of K-pop as one of the most popular genres in the world. As Rebecca Sun, author of the Substack The Quiet Part, noted, K-pop groups like Blackpink, BTS, TWICE, and NewJeans often do not receive adequate attention from the American mainstream, despite their massive popularity.
“I noticed that every project that highlights historically excluded culture or subculture always has greater success if it simply immerses you in it, rather than trying to explain it in banal terms,” Sun noted.
How Netflix Gained Access to the Film
The film was entirely produced by Sony Pictures Animation, a well-known company that created the Oscar-winning Spiderverse films. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans worked with Sony to prepare the project, but the company decided not to release the film on its own.
At the same time, having a contract with Netflix, Sony agreed that the streaming platform committed to financing at least one to two films per year. Thus, Netflix agreed to acquire rights to their films for placement on its platform.
Underestimation of the Film
“Interestingly, it wasn't just Sony that underestimated this film. I myself ignored the invitation from Netflix to the preview,” Sun noted.
Rebecca explained that her skepticism about the industry arose due to Hollywood's historical record of failing to create successful projects about K-pop. Many times studios have tried to make films on this topic, but without success.
Reasons for the Success of KPop Demon Hunters
One of the main reasons for the success of KPop Demon Hunters lies in its proactive approach to including K-pop. The film does not try to explain the popularity of the genre; it simply shows that all the characters love K-pop music.
“This film is different in that it doesn't need to explain why the characters are fascinated by K-pop; here, everyone is simply in love with this genre,” she noted.
The Future of the Film
When asked how long the film would remain at the top of popularity, Rebecca joked that you should ask the kids.
KPop Demon Hunters not only highlights the popularity of K-pop but also emphasizes the cultural significance of a genre that is gaining increasing followers worldwide. The success of the film may serve as a signal for other film companies looking to explore and popularize the diversity of musical genres in cinema.
