NBA Scandal Over Betting: Players and Coach Accused in Gambling Scheme.
According to Vox: Last week, the NBA faced a serious blow with accusations against three players for illegal sports betting, including the coach of the Portland Trail Blazers. I spoke with my colleague Brian Walsh, who heads Vox’s Future Perfect, about the crisis that has emerged in the league due to these accusations, as well as the broader issue of gambling in the US.
What happened in the NBA last week? What are the allegations?
On Thursday morning, the FBI, the New York Police Department, and New York State officials announced charges in a major scheme involving illegal sports betting and poker. The case involves several current and former NBA players, including active Miami Heat player Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach, Hall of Famer Chauncey Billups.
They are accused of providing gamblers with insider information that allowed for profitable bets. This is essentially insider trading, but in the world of sports betting.
Why is this a major problem for the NBA?
This significantly impacts the NBA and all sports leagues, as concerns have existed since the legalization of gambling in 2018 about possible scandals that could harm the integrity of the game. The introduction of sportsbooks in sports venues, which seemed unbelievable just ten years ago, has become a reality due to the rapid development of the gambling industry in the US.
With new apps like DraftKings and FanDuel, it has become easier not just to bet on the outcome of the game but also to make micro-bets: 'How many minutes will a player be on the court? Will he play the entire game?' — this data can be manipulated from the inside.
What does the demand for gambling look like in the US?
The demand is enormous. Recent surveys have shown that about 20% of adults in the US have placed bets on sports or have active online accounts. Overall, this amounts to over $10 billion. Much of this money flows to sports leagues through sponsorships.
Viewers of games have recently been bombarded with advertising from DraftKings, FanDuel, and other bookmakers. This has become an important part of the sports industry in the US, and it seems this trend will only continue to grow.
In an industry where everything is easily accessible through mobile apps, it is no surprise that serious issues arise for sports leagues. Unfortunately, this isn’t the last scandal we will hear about.
What is the NBA's reaction to this situation?
The NBA stated that they are considering federal charges. Rozier and Billups have been suspended from their teams. They emphasized that they will cooperate with authorities, taking the accusations seriously and prioritizing the integrity of the game.
“If the integrity of your game is truly your priority, you probably wouldn’t be so heavily involved in betting.”
Were sports leagues against the legalization of gambling before the Supreme Court’s decision in 2018? Yes, but once the doors opened, they had to either join the new order or lose billions of dollars.
What impact does this have on bettors?
The gambling boom has led to serious problems. We are seeing an increase in calls to hotlines. Studies show that people who actively bet have lower savings. This truly impacts society. Gambling has become almost inseparable from everyday life, complicating life for those struggling with addiction.
Thus, the situation in the NBA serves as a troubling signal not only for the league but for bettors themselves. Given the deepening issues of gambling in the US, it is crucial for all stakeholders to pay attention to this issue and take steps to protect both athletes and fans.
