Khreshchatyk Stops Traffic: Kyiv Commemorates Fallen Heroes with a Minute of Silence Daily.
Minute of Silence in Kyiv
According to Novyny.live: On January 14, 2025, a minute of silence took place on Khreshchatyk in Kyiv, honoring the memory of fallen soldiers. This event occurs daily at 9:00 AM, when traffic on Khreshchatyk is halted. The closure will last from European Square to Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, allowing Kyiv residents and tourists to pay their respects to the fallen.
The decision for a daily minute of silence was initiated in 2022 based on proposals from public organizations. The Kyiv City Council supported this initiative, considering the importance of honoring those who gave their lives in the struggle for Ukraine. In December 2025, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill confirming the significance of the minute of silence for those who died as a result of Russian aggression.
Significance of the Tradition
This tradition has already become an integral part of life in the capital, reminding us of the heroism and selflessness of Ukrainian soldiers who fight for the country's independence. The minute of silence on Khreshchatyk is a symbol of memory and solidarity of the Ukrainian people.
Commemorating the fallen soldiers in Kyiv emphasizes the importance of collective memory in society and also provides citizens with the opportunity to come together in moments of grief and support one another. Such an initiative not only honors the heroism of those who fought for Ukraine but also creates a space for reflection on peace and stability in a country undergoing difficult times.
