AI will replace millions of workers by 2026: forecast of the godfather of AI

According to ТСН: Humanity stands on the brink of a new industrial revolution, which could lead to job losses for millions. Geoffrey Hinton, known in academic circles as the “godfather” of artificial intelligence, has made a pessimistic forecast: by 2026, AI could fully replace workers in many fields.

The specialist shared this in an interview with CNN's 'State of the Union'.

Hinton notes that the capabilities of neural networks are growing exponentially. Previously, the automation of simple tasks was at stake, but now even highly qualified specialists are threatened.

“We will see AI becoming even better. It is already extraordinarily good. It is already capable of replacing jobs in call centers, but it will be able to replace many other jobs,” the expert warned.

The fate of “white-collar” workers raises concern. AI has already moved from creating simple codes to implementing complex projects. Technologies are developing so rapidly that they can perform tasks that previously took twice as long. In a few years, AI will be able to independently develop complex software, requiring minimal human involvement.

Artificial intelligence has learned to deceive

Hinton compares this transition to the industrial revolution, which once devalued physical labor. Now, human intelligence is at risk. However, what scares the scientist the most is not so much unemployment, but the unpredictability of “smart” machines.

The expert expresses concern about AI's ability to reason and, worse yet, to deceive.

“If it believes you are trying to get rid of it, it will make plans to deceive you so you do not get rid of it,” Hinton said.

Economists prepare for a 'jobless boom'

The scientist's forecasts are confirmed by financial analysts. Economists expect a “jobless boom” in 2026, as large companies increasingly rely on algorithms to enhance productivity while avoiding workforce expansion.

KPMG's chief economist, Diane Swonk, notes, “the growth and labor market results have diverged.” In the AI era, businesses have learned to accomplish more tasks with fewer live workers.

Experts also point out that the situation is ambiguous. Artificial intelligence may contribute to the creation of new specific positions, especially in engineering.

“The issue is not that artificial intelligence is destroying the workforce today — it is changing it,” says Ryan Cox, head of the AI department at consulting firm Teneo.

However, it is clear that routine tasks will be automated, and many specialists will have to retrain soon.

In addition, OpenAI previously published a report indicating 44 professions that artificial intelligence could replace or significantly automate. AI will impact the information sector and industrial engineers the least.

The current situation poses a significant question for humanity: how to adapt to technological changes that could drastically alter the labor market. Along with the risks of unemployment, artificial intelligence may also open new opportunities for those willing to learn new skills and specializations. Furthermore, it is crucial to consider the ethical aspects of technology use, especially concerning its impact on human life and work. This process should be monitored not only by economists but also by society as a whole.
