According to The Sun: Food always brings pleasure.

However, some of us quickly start to feel pain from sudden heartburn.

Heartburn is extremely common, affecting up to one in every four UK adults,

This is usually a symptom of acid reflux - also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

While there is often no obvious reason for why people have heartburn, according to nutrition experts, there are things you can do to reduce the symptoms.

Take a walk

Walk around your garden or neighborhood after dinner.

Doctor Natasha Jiri from the Light Touch clinic says: 'A walk after meals allows the starches and fats in your stomach to digest, helping to avoid bowel issues, digestive problems, and acid reflux.'

In some cases, acid reflux can be caused by dysbiosis of gut flora - sometimes referred to as 'leaky gut.'

This occurs when there is an imbalance between beneficial and harmful bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Research has shown that the state of our gut microbiome can also affect mood, immune health, and weight.

Even if you are in ironclad shape, there are quick and simple ways to give your belly some love that don’t involve expensive supplements.

Consume turmeric

'Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe an upset stomach, alleviate nausea and discomfort, and support digestion,' says Melanie Dixon, a nutrition doctor from Vitaminology.

To make a turmeric drink, place one cup of milk, 1 tsp of coconut oil, 1/4 tsp of ground turmeric, and 1 tsp of ground ginger in a blender and blend until smooth.

Bring to a saucepan, bring to a boil, and serve hot. Add honey for sweetness if needed.

Increase plant intake

The fastest way to improve your gut health is to eat at least 30 different plant foods each week

'The fastest way to improve your gut health is to eat at least 30 different plant foods each week,' says Liv Morrison, a dietitian at the health app Keep It Cleaner.

This may sound like a lot, but we can all squeeze in at least a few other types of vegetables with these simple tricks:

  • Add spinach, cucumbers, kale, frozen cauliflower, or zucchini to smoothies
  • Rotate Asian greens in broth-based dishes - try Chinese broccoli, choy sum, or pak choi
  • Add canned beans to curries or pasta sauces
  • Try celery or fennel sticks with hummus instead of just carrots

Pet your animal

Petting your animal improves your well-being

Research has shown that pet owners have a healthier and more diverse gut microbiome than those without pets.

‘Dogs expose people to a whole host of microscopic organisms, many of which do wonders for our gut health and immunity,’ explains Dr. Caitlin Hall, chief dietitian at fiber experts Myota.

Don’t have a pet? Even hugging a friend’s dog for a few minutes gives you exposure to the microbes in their fur.
