Iran Labels EU Military Forces as Terrorist Organizations in Retaliatory Move.
Escalating Tensions Between Iran and the European Union
According to TSN.ua: In a retaliatory measure, Iran has formally designated the military forces of the European Union as terrorist organizations. This move comes directly in response to the EU's own decision to add Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to its list of terrorist groups. The situation highlights a dangerous tit-for-tat escalation in rhetoric between Tehran and Western powers. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressed concern over a potential U.S. strike against Iran, warning that such aggression could ignite a broader regional war. Khamenei stated that if Washington 'initiates a war,' it would this time 'escalate into a regional conflict.'
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Iran's Parliament, confirmed the designation of all EU member states' armed forces as terrorist entities. Despite the aggressive rhetoric, Khamenei emphasized that Iran does not seek aggression, but asserted that 'the Iranian people will decisively strike anyone who attacks or pressures' the nation.
Regional Dynamics and Qatar's Mediating Role
Amid these tensions, rumors of IRGC exercises scheduled for February 1-2 in the Strait of Hormuz were denied by an Iranian official. This denial suggests an attempt by Tehran to avoid further military escalation in the strategically vital waterway.
Qatar, a key mediator in the region, is actively working to de-escalate tensions between the involved parties. The regional situation remains volatile, and Iran's actions, along with the international response, could significantly influence future developments.
Iran's branding of EU forces as terrorists marks a sharp deterioration in relations with Western nations, raising the risk of armed conflict in the Middle East. With Qatar attempting to mediate, the international community is closely watching the next steps from Iran, the EU, and the United States to see if a further escalation can be averted. Preserving peace in the region will be a critical test for international diplomacy.
