Iran has released two French citizens: details of the agreement with Macron.
According to inkorr.com: French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Iran has released two French citizens – Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris. They had been in custody since 2022 on charges of espionage. The French leader called this 'the first step' and emphasized the importance of continuing dialogue with the Iranian side for the quick return of Kohler and Paris to their homeland.
Status of the released
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barraud also confirmed that the released citizens are safe. They were released on bail and will remain in Iran under supervision until the completion of the trial.
In September 2025, French authorities withdrew the case against Iran from the International Court of Justice, which analysts regarded as a step towards a prisoner exchange.
Criticism and accusations
France has repeatedly accused Iran of using foreigners as 'hostages' to pressure other countries or to obtain concessions. Despite Tehran's denials, Western human rights advocates consider this practice widespread.
The release of two French citizens from Iranian prisons could be an important step towards their return to France. The withdrawal of the case against Iran in the International Court of Justice in September 2025 suggests the possibility of a prisoner exchange, which could change the dynamics of relations between the countries.
