Ireland Assumes the EU Council Presidency

According to UATV: On July 1, 2023, Ireland officially took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, succeeding Cyprus. The handover ceremony in Dublin marked a significant moment for the European community, during which the new presidency outlined its key priorities. These include:

  • support for Ukraine;
  • maintaining sanctions pressure on Russia;
  • accelerating Ukraine’s European integration.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the event, where he called for deeper defense cooperation. He stressed the importance of continued backing from the European Union amid the ongoing war.

“The Russian Federation does not act out of goodwill,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing the need for solidarity and support from the international community.

In his speech, Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin reaffirmed his country’s commitment to Ukraine, declaring:

“We will, of course, continue to support Ukraine.”
This underscores Ireland’s intent to play an active role in EU policies aimed at assisting Ukraine on its path toward European integration.

Progress in EU Accession Talks with Candidate Countries

European Council President António Costa expressed hope during the ceremony for advancement in accession negotiations with EU candidate countries, particularly Ukraine. He noted that “The situation on the battlefield is changing thanks to the courage of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” highlighting the importance of the support provided to Ukraine in its fight for independence.

By taking the helm of the EU Council, Ireland has placed a strong focus on issues central to Ukraine’s support and the continuation of sanctions against Russia. This move underscores the importance of international solidarity in addressing the urgent challenges Europe currently faces. With rising tensions in the region, Ireland’s proactive stance could send a powerful signal to other EU member states about the need to consolidate efforts in backing Ukraine and countering Russian aggression.
