Ireland Reduces Support for Ukrainians: What Will Change for Refugees.
According to inkorr.com: The Irish government has decided to shorten the stay of Ukrainians in state accommodation from 90 to 30 days due to a significant influx of refugees. Since February 2022, more than 120,000 Ukrainians in need of housing have arrived in the country. Now, Ukrainians with jobs are required to make financial contributions to cover living expenses.
The Irish Minister of Justice, Jim O'Callaghan, supported this decision, seeing the necessity of such contributions; however, the details of implementation still need discussion.
At the same time, some public figures and politicians have expressed concern about this reduction in the period of residence for Ukrainians in state housing. The organization Doras warned that such a change could lead to homelessness, as 90 days is the minimum necessary to find alternative housing.
The Ambassador of Ukraine in Ireland, Larysa Geras'ko, noted that last year, the costs of maintaining Ukrainian refugees amounted to over 2 billion euros, while state support for housing has significantly decreased.
Thus, the decision of the Irish government to reduce the stay of Ukrainians in state housing to 30 days sparked outrage among activists and politicians who emphasize the risk of homelessness.
This move has triggered heated discussions in society, as without adequate support, many people may end up on the streets. The government must consider the opinions of experts and activists to avoid worsening the situation for refugees who have already faced numerous difficulties.
