ISW assessed the Russian counteroffensive in Kursk.
Russian troops continue to attack on the Ukrainian salient in the Kursk region, but for a prolonged counteroffensive, the occupiers will likely have to transfer additional units from other front sectors to the region. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports this in its report.
According to ISW, Russia has not yet launched a large-scale counteroffensive operation that would completely expel Ukrainian forces from Kursk.
On September 14, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Russian troops had begun counteroffensive actions in the Kursk region. Ukrainian observer Konstantin Mashovets reported that up to 35,000 Russian servicemen are located in the region.
Meanwhile, Zelensky warned that Russia intends to concentrate up to 70,000 servicemen in the Kursk region, and according to American officials, they will need 50,000 servicemen to expel the Ukrainians from Kursk.
Analysts believe that Russian invaders will be forced to transfer parts and operational reserves from Ukraine to the Kursk region to form combat-ready units for conducting a large counteroffensive operation and guarding the border. The Russian military command is likely planning to deploy more «elite» units to reclaim territory.
Vladimir Putin has ordered the expulsion of the Ukrainian army from the Russian Federation's Kursk region by October 1.
According to DeepState analysts, the situation on the left flank of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region has worsened. Russian troops have begun active assault actions in Kursk, crossing rivers with armored vehicles.
