Meloni on Security Guarantees for Ukraine: Why Italy Will Not Send Troops.
According to ТСН: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni believes that the main way to ensure Ukraine's security is through a system similar to NATO's Article 5. In her opinion, there is currently no sense in sending Italian soldiers to support the Ukrainian army.
At the concluding press conference, Meloni stated:
“If there is a security system inspired by NATO's Article 5, this is the main form of security guarantees for Ukraine.”
She also emphasized that such a system would guarantee that in the event of an aggressor's attack, allied countries and states that signed these guarantees would intervene.
“Then sending soldiers to reinforce the Ukrainian army may be... I do not doubt the countries that want to do this [now], but I do not consider it necessary on Italy's part,” she said.
Giorgia Meloni also noted that the presence of a small number of foreign troops in Ukraine would be ineffective against Russia's military power.
“How many troops do we need to send to Ukraine to be effective in terms of deterring an army that numbers about one and a half million people?”
It should be noted that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has advocated for the restoration of direct communication between Europe and the Kremlin.
These comments from Meloni explain Italy's position on the Ukrainian conflict. She emphasizes the importance of collective security and the desire to avoid direct military intervention, while also stressing the necessity of dialogue with Russia. This approach may influence the future political situation in Europe and relations with Moscow, as the absence of military support could change the dynamics of the conflict.
