Italy supports the confiscation of Russian assets for Ukraine: what condition Meloni named.
According to ТСН: Italy supports the idea of using frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine, but this should be done on a "solid legal basis."
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that the country supports economic pressure on Russia, but believes that the issue of asset confiscation should be approached with caution.
"You tell me to say 'yes' because the legal basis is strong. We disagree. Not because we are friends with Putin, but quite the opposite: if the legal basis for this initiative were not strong, we would be giving Russia its first real victory since the beginning of this conflict," Meloni said.
She also emphasized that Italy considers it a "sacred principle" that Russia should bear the responsibility for restoring Ukraine, as Moscow is responsible for the current destructions. However, according to her, this needs to be done on a solid legal basis.
"Any instrument of support for Kyiv must always comply with European values and rules, which are based on the rule of law," the Prime Minister stated.
Previously, Meloni also noted that Russia is making "unfounded" demands in the context of peace negotiations.
Italy’s position on frozen assets and Russia's responsibility underscores the importance of ensuring a legal basis for any actions related to supporting Ukraine. In light of the ongoing conflict, justice and accountability for restoration remain key issues in international relations.
