Kyiv's Trams and Trolleybuses Remain Idle for 40 Days: Awaiting Power to Resume Service.
Kyiv's Electric Transport at a Standstill
According to Novyny.live: For over 40 days, Kyiv's trams and trolleybuses have been out of service due to a severe electricity shortage. The city's Department of Transport Infrastructure (KCMA) has stated that electric public transport can only resume once a stable power supply is confirmed and safe operating conditions for the infrastructure are in place. This prolonged disruption is a direct consequence of Russia's war on Ukraine, which has targeted the nation's energy grid.
The crisis in Ukraine has led to the disappearance of 80% of transport operators, making the situation for the city's electric transport particularly difficult. While the KCMA is exploring options to restart tram and trolleybus services, any progress is entirely dependent on the broader energy situation across the country.
Planned Reconstruction of a Key Intersection
Separately, Kyiv plans to reconstruct a major transport interchange at the intersection of Beresteyskyi Avenue and Vadym Hetman Street. The estimated cost for this project is 609.8 million hryvnias. Preliminary estimates suggest that the gross annual revenue from route transportation in the capital could reach around one billion dollars, underscoring the economic importance of restoring electric transport for the city's economy.
Restoring electric transport is a crucial step for improving Kyiv's infrastructure, and residents are hopeful for a swift resolution to the power supply issues. The stability of the national energy system will remain the key factor in reviving this essential city transport, which is vital for economic activity and the quality of life for Kyiv's inhabitants.
Concurrently, the reconstruction of the transport interchange could become a significant component in the broader plan for urban transport development, potentially reducing traffic congestion and increasing the efficiency of public transit.
