Kyiv Public Transit Fare Hikes to 30 Hryvnias: What’s Driving the Increase.
Kyiv Public Transit Fare Increases
According to Novyny.live: The Kyiv city administration has announced a rise in public transport fares, sparking concern among residents of the capital. Starting July 15, a single trip on the metro or buses will cost 30 hryvnias. This decision could boost the popularity of private carriers, as the new fare will be higher than in cities like Vienna, Warsaw, and Budapest.
The fare increase raises questions about the state of the capital's transport networks. In 2018, after the previous fare hike, no new metro stations were built in Kyiv. This suggests that, despite rising ticket prices, infrastructure improvements to public transport are not materializing. Furthermore, the number of trolleybuses on routes has also declined, further complicating the situation for passengers.
Oleksandr Grechko, a transport expert, commented on the decision: 'They are acting solely to reduce the amount of transport and ensure that as few paying passengers as possible use it.'
With the new fares, Kyiv residents may face significant changes in their public transit habits. It remains unclear whether the new pricing system will lead to better service quality or, conversely, encourage a shift away from municipal transport toward private operators.
Impact on Residents' Mobility
The changes in Kyiv's public transport fares could significantly affect the mobility of the capital's residents. Given the lack of investment in modernizing and expanding transport infrastructure, the new prices may push people to seek alternatives, particularly private carriers. This could lead to a further decline in the popularity of municipal transport and increased strain on other modes of transit, raising concerns about accessibility and service quality for all residents.
It will also be important to monitor public reaction to these changes, as this could shape future transport policy in the city.
