Cyprus declared Igor Kolomoisky's citizenship null and void – Media.
The Government of Cyprus decided to revoke the citizenships of eight people, including Ukrainian businessman Igor Kolomoisky. This was reported by the Cypriot newspaper Philenews.
Kolomoisky has held Cypriot citizenship since 2010 and also holds Israeli citizenship since 1995. In September 2023, he was deprived of Ukrainian citizenship.
Kolomoisky was issued a Cypriot “golden passport” under the “citizenship in exchange for investment in the country's economy” program. Until 2019, obtaining such a passport required investing $2 million into the Cypriot economy.
However, in his naturalization application, he did not mention the tax evasion case in Russia that was opened against him in 2008.
In the decision of the Cypriot Cabinet of Ministers, it is noted that Kolomoisky “was and remains a person of questionable reputation, and his naturalization created and continues to create a high risk of bad reputation for the Republic of Cyprus.”
It should be noted that in 2021, the U.S. State Department banned Kolomoisky from entering the United States due to corruption charges.
In addition to Kolomoisky, the Council of Ministers also decided to revoke the Cypriot citizenship of seven other people: Egyptian investor Mohamed Abdelrahman Mohamed Salem, his wife and child, and Russian investor Maksim Zakharchenko, his wife and two children.
Regarding Zakharchenko, it was established that he concealed a court case against him and the freezing of assets in the U.S.
Recall that in July 2022, President Volodymyr Zelensky deprived Igor Kolomoisky, Gennady Korban, MPs Vadim Rabinovich, Igor Vasilkovsky, and six other individuals of Ukrainian citizenship. The corresponding presidential decree is classified.
In the fall of 2023, Kolomoisky contested Zelensky’s decree depriving him of Ukrainian citizenship. There is no final decision yet. The case materials contain a quote from Kolomoisky's letter to the President's Office dated July 24, 2022: “However, for some reason, it is precisely in my case that the Ukrainian state has deprived me of the opportunity to retain citizenship, and did so despite my recognized merits in the economy and defense of Ukraine.” In the same appeal, the oligarch requested the country's leadership to review the decision to revoke his citizenship and to maintain his status as a Ukrainian citizen.
