Ukraine is Awaiting Double-Decker Trains: What Will Change for Passengers.
According to inkorr.com: Ukrainians are facing a new phase in the development of railway transport — starting next year, modern double-decker passenger cars will appear on the tracks. Funds for their purchase are allocated in the state budget, and new technologies will allow for transporting more passengers at lower costs.
This was
reportedby Deputy Minister of Finance Oleksandr Kava during a meeting with representatives of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine (ACC).
When Double-Decker Trains Will Be Launched
According to Kava, the first such cars could start operating as early as 2026. Currently, the government has signed a contract for the supply of 100 new cars, some of which will be double-decker. Their estimated cost is 5.7 billion hryvnias.
The Deputy Minister noted that over the past five years, the government has already purchased 166 modern cars of Ukrainian production, which are currently in operation on various routes. The new double-decker cars will logically continue the modernization of the rolling stock.
Advantages of Double-Decker Cars
According to the Ministry of Finance, such trains will optimize transport costs:
- service costs exceed those of regular cars by 10%;
- meanwhile, the number of passenger seats increases by almost 80%;
- economic benefits are achieved through higher capacity and reduced fuel and maintenance costs.
“Double-decker cars will allow transporting significantly more people without increasing operational costs,” Kava explained.
Development Prospects
The Ministry of Finance plans to expand the model range of double-decker cars. Some of them will be adapted for night routes with sleeping compartments, while others will be for daytime routes with comfortable seating.
Ukrzaliznytsia is gradually modernizing its fleet, focusing on Ukrainian manufacturers. The development of double-decker trains is part of the state strategy for updating infrastructure and increasing the energy efficiency of transport.
Thanks to the implementation of cutting-edge technologies and the renewal of the rolling stock, Ukrainian rail transport has every chance of becoming more competitive. This, in turn, will create favorable conditions for the development of domestic and international transport, as well as contribute to the growth of the country's economy.
