Why a Former Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Turned Down a State Decoration.
A Rejected Honor
According to Novyny.live: Vasyl Zvarych, who previously served as Ukraine’s ambassador to Poland, has declined the Order of the Republic of Poland, citing political concerns tied to bilateral relations between the two nations. The award was presented to him in July 2024 by Polish President Andrzej Duda, but on June 21, Zvarych publicly announced his refusal to accept it.
Zvarych emphasized that his decision to reject the Polish state honor was not meant as a sign of disrespect toward the Polish people, his Polish friends, or those who have worked for years to foster Ukrainian-Polish understanding. In his statement, he declared:
“Loyalty to the interests of the Ukrainian state, the honor and dignity of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, my fellow diplomats, and the free and unbreakable Ukrainian people, along with a deep sense of justice, compel me to decline the state award of the Republic of Poland.” — Vasyl Zvarych
Historical Precedents
This is not the first time Ukrainian officials have turned down Polish honors. Notable examples include:
- Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s fifth president, declined the Polish Order of the White Eagle.
- Viktor Yushchenko, the third president of Ukraine, also refused Polish awards.
- Leonid Kuchma, Ukraine’s second president, likewise rejected such decorations.
These actions highlight the persistent complexities in Ukrainian-Polish relations and the political context in which they evolve.
Zvarych’s rejection of the award can be seen as a symbolic gesture that underscores ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Poland, particularly amid historical and contemporary political disputes. It also reflects how Ukrainian politicians continue to respond actively to shifting geopolitical conditions and historical disagreements that affect bilateral ties. Developments in this area could carry significant implications for future cooperation and partnership between the two countries.
