Shared Genetic Roots: Scientists Uncover Common Cancer Causes in Cats and Humans.
Investigating the Genetic Mechanisms of Cancer in Cats and Humans
According to TSN.ua: Scientists from the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge have discovered that domestic cats and humans share similar genetic mechanisms driving cancer development. This breakthrough could accelerate the search for novel treatments for oncological diseases. The study analyzed the tumor DNA of nearly 500 cats, identifying key genetic mutations linked to cancer.
By examining around a thousand genes, the researchers focused on 13 types of feline cancer. This work represents a significant advance in understanding feline cancer genetics, a field that was previously largely unexplored. Such comparative oncology studies are vital, as they can reveal biological pathways conserved across species.
Dr. Louise van der Weyden noted: 'Until now, the genetics of cancer in cats has been a virtually unknown field.'
Notably, triple-negative breast cancer in humans accounts for roughly 15% of all breast cancer cases. This aggressive disease shares genetic mechanisms now also identified in cats. With over 10 million cats kept as pets in the UK alone, they represent a crucial population for research in this area.
Professor Geoffrey Wood emphasized that this research helps clarify why cancer develops in both cats and people, opening new avenues for future scientific development. While dogs have been studied more extensively regarding cancer, the findings from this study could form the basis for new treatment approaches across different species.
Future Prospects for Cancer Treatment
This research has the potential to transform cancer treatment strategies, creating new opportunities to adapt methods used in both veterinary and human medicine. The identified common genetic mechanisms could underpin the development of targeted therapies effective for both cats and humans.
Given the rising incidence of oncological diseases globally, studies of this nature represent a crucial step in the fight against this formidable illness.
