Land Rover Dakar D7X-R: a combat Defender for the World Championship

According to Korrespondent.net: The company Land Rover has presented the most powerful version of its Defender - the Dakar D7X-R, designed specifically for participation in the 2026 W2RC World Rally-Raid Championship. This vehicle will be piloted by 14-time rally-raid winner Stéphane Peterhansel.

This combat prototype is based on the production Defender Octa, but competition rules only allow for minor modifications. Therefore, the main architecture of the vehicle remains unchanged, but it has received enhanced underbody protection, an improved cooling system, and increased off-road angles.

You can identify the Dakar D7X-R by its massive wheel arch extensions, cutouts in the bumpers and sills, a larger air intake, ventilation slots on the hood, dual snorkels, and additional LED lighting on the roof. To reduce weight, the spare wheel has been removed from the tailgate. A bright design is complemented by a special desert livery 'Geopalette'.

The design of the Dakar D7X-R also includes significantly wider tracks, increased ground clearance, and 35-inch tires. The suspension is based on high-performance Bilstein shock absorbers, while the braking system includes perforated discs with six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear.

Interior and Technical Specifications

The car's interior is fully adapted for competition. It is equipped with a safety cage, carbon elements, sports seats with six-point seat belts, and additional displays. The rear row of seats has been removed to make room for tools, three spare wheels, a compressor, jacks, and a water tank.

Under the hood is a familiar 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8, modified to run on eco-friendly fuel. The eight-speed automatic transmission has been carried over from the civilian version but has a new final drive ratio for better performance on stages. The electronics are managed by a new sports control unit, which includes a Flight Mode that optimizes traction after jumps from sand dunes. A large fuel tank with a capacity of 550 liters has also been installed for competition purposes.

Race Readiness

Production of the Dakar D7X-R is set up at the plant in Nitra (Slovakia) alongside the production Defender Octa. The vehicle has already undergone over 6000 km of testing in extreme conditions, preparing for its debut in Saudi Arabia in January 2026.

During the Dakar stage, Defender crews will spend over 80 hours on the racing course, covering 5000 km of special zones. The team will be represented by the crews Peterhansel/Métret, Baczyński/Vidal, and Price/Berriman, with Ivan James appointed as the project leader. In the Stock category, Defender's competitors will be the Toyota Land Cruiser GR Sport and the Nissan Patrol.

It is worth mentioning that a new rally Yaris powered by Toyota was recently unveiled.
