Lithuania Considers Joining Trump's Proposed Peace Council: Details on the US Plan.
Lithuania Weighs Membership in Trump's Peace Council
According to TSN.ua: Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda has confirmed that his country is discussing the possibility of joining a peace council proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which includes members of the NB8 format. This initiative emerges as the United States seeks to reshape its diplomatic engagements in Europe. The NB8 group comprises the following nations:
- Finland
- Sweden
- Denmark
- Norway
- Iceland
- Lithuania
- Latvia
- Estonia
Among the countries that have reportedly already agreed to participate in this initiative is Belarus.
Potential Expansion of the Council's Role
Initially conceived to oversee the reconstruction of the Gaza sector, the scope of Trump's Peace Council could be broadened to address other international conflicts, including Russia's war against Ukraine. The potential invitation of leaders such as Vladimir Putin, Alexander Lukashenko, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy has raised concerns regarding their participation.
President Nausėda stressed that Lithuania's involvement must be coordinated in advance with its NB8 partners. He also noted that U.S. officials emphasize the importance of NATO and a fair sharing of defense burdens among allies. However, the United Kingdom has stated it does not intend to become a signatory to Trump's new Peace Council due to the inclusion of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as declared by Yvette Cooper.
The discussions about Lithuania joining the council highlight the increasing geopolitical tensions in the Baltic region, particularly following Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Lithuania's potential participation could strengthen the security posture of the Baltic states in cooperation with the U.S., while the UK's refusal underscores the complex diplomatic calculations involved in such initiatives.
