Malta to introduce tax benefits for large families: what will change.
According to inkorr.com: Malta has decided to support large families by reducing taxes to increase the birth rate in the country. Malta's Minister of Finance Clyde Caruana proposed new tax benefits as part of the 2026 budget, emphasizing the importance of this step amidst a serious demographic crisis.
“We need to encourage more families to have at least two children,” Caruana emphasized.
Demographic situation in Malta
According to official Eurostat data, Malta has the lowest birth rate among European Union countries, highlighting the need for measures to support families and stimulate childbirth. The new tax benefits will be in place for several years for parents raising two or more children, allowing them to keep more funds in their budget for the development and care of their children.
International experience
Similar initiatives to support families and increase birth rates have already been implemented in other countries such as Poland, Greece, and South Korea. This indicates that such strategies are becoming increasingly common worldwide against the backdrop of demographic challenges.
The changes implemented may significantly impact the future demographic situation in Malta. Birth rates in the country have been low for several years, so new initiatives may be an important step in addressing this issue. Improving family support policies could provide a substantial impetus for enhancing the demographic situation in the country.
