Russia Launches Large-Scale Attack on Ukraine

According to Espreso.tv: In the early hours of July 2, Russia carried out a massive assault on Ukraine, with Kyiv as a primary target. Political analyst Oleg Saakyan argues that this attack was designed to generate a propaganda spectacle. He reports that the death toll in Kyiv has climbed to 21, with dozens more wounded. Saakyan emphasizes that Putin’s regime is grappling with mounting internal challenges—ranging from economic woes to fuel shortages—and is resorting to terrorizing civilians as a way to project an image of power.

“They chose Kyiv, the capital, so that a barrage of ballistic missiles and horrific footage would serve as an ‘adrenaline shot for the decaying Putin regime.’”

He added: “The Putin regime has always relied on the ‘bread and circuses’ principle. But when bread runs short—due to economic troubles, gasoline deficits, and resource scarcity—the Kremlin must compensate with circuses.”

Ukraine’s air defense systems reportedly intercepted over 500 targets during this attack. Saakyan also noted that “in the twisted logic of Russian propaganda, showing strength isn’t about military victories—it’s about terrorizing civilians.” This assault on Kyiv, therefore, reveals not just a military operation but a deliberate Kremlin strategy to manage its deepening domestic crisis.

What This Means for Ukraine and the Region

The attack underscores growing security concerns in Ukraine, especially amid renewed threats from Russia. At the same time, it may signal the Kremlin’s attempt to divert attention from its internal struggles and rally patriotic fervor at home. While Ukraine’s air defenses proved effective, the situation remains volatile, hinting at the likelihood of further strikes in the future.
