International Media Literacy Conference Held in Ukraine

According to Espreso.tv: Experts gathered at an international conference on media literacy to discuss how to advance media literacy in Ukraine, the critical role of independent media, and the impact of information attacks on national security. The event was organized by the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine. Participants included professionals from various fields, among them Oleksandr Burmagin, a member of the National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting.

Educational Initiatives and Their Impact

Over the past three years, Ukraine has implemented several educational projects targeting journalists, editors, and media specialists. Media literacy has been integrated into the New Ukrainian School reform, underscoring its importance in modern education. More than 3.3 million Ukrainians use the 'Diia.Osvita' service, reflecting a strong public interest in improving their skills in this area. The share of the population with basic digital skills has risen to 58%, a positive development.

The OSCE has introduced a media literacy program at 11 Ukrainian universities, through which approximately 9,000 students have already completed the training.

Oleksandr Burmagin: 'Media is both a subject, an object, and a tool of media literacy.'

Inna Kilderova emphasized that 'media literacy is no longer just about education.' Anastasiia Ravva noted, 'If a person does not have access to quality information, they will still consume fakes,' highlighting the importance of access to reliable sources. Olga Prokopenko added, 'Media literacy today is not only an educational issue,' pointing to its broader societal context.

The rise of media literacy in Ukraine is a key factor in addressing modern challenges, especially information warfare and disinformation. The introduction of educational programs and the active involvement of various professionals demonstrate a clear recognition of the value of high-quality information for society. Improving media literacy can significantly enhance citizens' ability to critically evaluate information, thereby strengthening national security and democratic values in Ukraine.
