At UN Security Council, Ukraine Demands Inevitable Accountability for Russian War Crimes.
Address by Andrii Melnyk to the UN Security Council
According to TSN.ua: During a UN Security Council meeting, Ukraine's Permanent Representative, Andrii Melnyk, insisted that Russia must be held accountable for war crimes committed since its full-scale invasion. He detailed the gravity of the situation, citing specific atrocities such as the mass killings in Bucha, forced deportations, torture, and incidents of sexual violence. This call for justice comes as international legal bodies continue to gather evidence of potential crimes against humanity.
Melnyk further emphasized that deliberate attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure have had severe humanitarian consequences for the population.
"Entire cities are plunged into cold and darkness," - Andrii Melnyk, he stated, highlighting the crisis these actions have caused. The Ukrainian envoy stressed that
"accountability for these crimes must be inevitable" - Andrii Melnyk.
Negotiations and International Support
In his remarks, Melnyk argued that
"justice and accountability are not an obstacle to peace, but rather its foundation" - Andrii Melnyk. He added that
"there can be no selective justice or immunity," - Andrii Melnyk, underlining the critical need for fair investigation and punishment for crimes against the Ukrainian people.
Concurrently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a new series of negotiations involving the United States and Russia, which could represent a significant step toward resolving the conflict. However, Ukraine maintains its focus on ensuring accountability for war crimes as a core priority.
Melnyk's statement underscores the importance of sustained international support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war and the fundamental need for justice for the victims of these atrocities. The emphasis on accountability could form a basis for future negotiations, helping to establish conditions for a just resolution. Ukraine's firm stance may serve as a catalyst for the international community to reinforce its commitment to human rights and international law.
