Kharkiv Mayor Slams Parliament for Lack of Quorum as Nation Freezes.
Kharkiv Mayor Criticizes Parliament's Failure to Assemble
According to Novyny.live: On February 3, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov publicly criticized Ukrainian MPs for failing to establish a quorum in the Verkhovna Rada, which halted the consideration of vital wartime legislation. In a Telegram post, he stated that parliament was unable to convene to debate a critical package of laws concerning:
- centralized heating supply
- restoring the solvency of energy companies
- implementing infrastructure projects
- developing alternative energy sources
Terekhov emphasized that the deputies' failure to perform their duties shows disrespect for society and the Ukrainian people. 'The Verkhovna Rada was supposed to consider a crucial legislative package today. However, the parliament's work has been derailed due to the lack of a quorum,' he said.
He further pointed out that 'when the country is freezing, parliament has no right to take a break.' Concluding his remarks, the Kharkiv mayor noted that 'the war does not pause. Responsibility shouldn't either.' These words underscore the critical need for parliament to function actively during wartime and to pass decisions affecting national stability. This impasse occurs as millions of Ukrainians face severe energy challenges following Russian attacks on infrastructure.
The Critical Need for a Parliamentary Quorum
The inability to secure a quorum in the Verkhovna Rada during wartime poses a serious risk with potential negative consequences for the nation. The proposed laws address critical areas like energy security and infrastructure projects, which directly impact citizens' daily lives. Mayor Terekhov's reaction highlights the necessity for deputies to uphold their responsibility to society and for state institutions to operate reliably, even under martial law.
