Metro Station Renaming in Ukraine

According to Novyny.live: Amid the ongoing war, Ukraine is undergoing a process of renaming its metro stations. This initiative aims to update symbols and reflect current realities. Such name changes have been recorded in the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro.

List of Renamed Metro Stations

In Kyiv, three metro stations have been renamed. In May 2023, the Kyiv City Council approved the decision to change the names of the following stops:

  • ‘Druzhby Narodiv’ to ‘Zvirynetska’
  • ‘Ploshcha Lva Tolstoho’ to ‘Ploshcha Ukrainskykh Heroiv’
  • ‘Prospekt Pravdy’ (under construction) to ‘Varshavska’

Kharkiv also saw several station renamings. On April 29, 2024, two stations were renamed:

  • ‘Pushkinska’ to ‘Yaroslava Mudroho’
  • ‘Pivdennyi Vokzal’ to ‘Vokzalna’

Later, on July 27, 2024, three more renamings took place in Kharkiv:

  • ‘Prospekt Haharina’ became ‘Levada’
  • ‘Heroiv Pratsi’ became ‘Saltivska’
  • ‘Zavod imeni Malysheva’ became ‘Zavodska’

Dnipro also experienced a station renaming. On November 24, 2015, the station ‘Komunarivska’ was renamed to ‘Pokrovska’.

These changes in metro station names reflect a drive for greater relevance and alignment with modern Ukrainian realities. The renaming process serves as a symbol of new times and support for national identity during the war.

The renaming of metro stations in Ukraine is part of a broader societal adaptation to new conditions, particularly in the context of war and national identity. It demonstrates a desire to reshape perceptions of history and culture by discarding symbols that no longer align with contemporary values. These name changes can also influence public opinion and foster a new attitude toward national heroes and events unfolding in the country.
