DNA Collection Drive in Poland Aims to Reconnect Families Separated by War.
DNA Sample Collection Program Launches
According to Novyny.live: The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) has announced a new program to collect DNA samples from relatives of Ukrainians who have gone missing due to the war and are now in Poland. This initiative seeks to create DNA profiles to aid in the identification of individuals who have lost contact with their families. The program is a critical effort to address one of the war's most painful human consequences.
The application period for relatives to submit samples will remain open until January 30, 2026. This campaign is being implemented by the ICMP in cooperation with the Main Investigative Department of the National Police of Ukraine. Through this program, family members can provide DNA samples that may prove vital in the search for and identification of missing persons.
Broader Efforts to Identify the Missing
In a related development, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, approved a bill in December that allows investigators to involve foreign specialists in the identification of bodies or remains. These steps demonstrate a concerted effort to resolve the complex humanitarian issues arising from the conflict.
This initiative is a crucial step in supporting the families of missing persons and could significantly contribute to their identification.
The involvement of international experts and the creation of DNA profiles highlights the growing focus on human rights and the necessity of addressing humanitarian crises caused by war. The program also underscores the importance of international cooperation in identifying the missing and supporting their families during immensely difficult times.
