Moldova Rejects Any Transnistria Reunification Plan Lacking Sovereignty and EU Path.
Moldova Rejects Reunification Plans for Transnistria
According to Novyny.live: Moldova will not accept any plan for the reintegration of the breakaway region of Transnistria unless it explicitly upholds the country's sovereignty and its strategic course toward European Union membership, stated Deputy Prime Minister Valeriu Kiver. He emphasized that any agreement lacking these two foundational principles would be unacceptable to the Moldovan government.
Over more than 30 years of negotiations, Moldova and Transnistria have signed approximately 250 different documents. However, it is crucial to note that Transnistria has never formally recognized the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. In Tiraspol, the region's capital, the ongoing process is not termed 'reintegration' but is instead referred to as the 'Moldovan-Transnistrian settlement.'
Moldova's Strategic Direction
Valeriu Kiver stressed that any reunification must align with Moldova's strategic goal of European integration.
"If these two principles are not enshrined in the document, it will merely be a virtual agreement that we will never sign," he stated. This firm stance underscores Moldova's commitment to resolving the Transnistrian issue on its own terms, prioritizing sovereignty and a European future. The dispute over Transnistria, a Russian-backed separatist region, remains a major challenge to Moldova's stability and EU aspirations.
Moldova's refusal to compromise on these core principles highlights the enduring stalemate between the two sides and the necessity for a clear position from Tiraspol. In the context of Moldova's European integration efforts, this declaration is likely to influence future negotiations and relations with international partners, as the country seeks to preserve its territorial integrity. Simultaneously, Transnistria's position, which rejects these principles, continues to pose a significant obstacle to reaching a consensus.
