Surviving Winter's Darkness: How Ukrainians Endure Without Power and Heat Amidst Attacks
According to UATV: As winter deepens, Ukraine's civilian population faces a severe humanitarian crisis due to sustained attacks on residential areas and critical energy infrastructure. These actions, which target civilians with the intent to terrorize, highlight Russia's cynical warfare tactics. The situation is particularly dire in Kyiv, where people are struggling to survive without heating or electricity.
The Human Toll of the Attacks
On January 9, 2026, a drone struck the building where Maria Vasylieva lives. She recalls:
"There were two strikes. The first hit the facade of the building directly, and when the fire started, I knew we had to get out."At the time of the attack, temperatures inside apartments had plummeted to 6-7 degrees Celsius. Tatiana Abramova, a resident of another building, noted:
"It's 6-7 degrees in my room right now. It's above an unheated entranceway with broken windows."
The scale of the assault on Ukraine's energy grid is vast. In 2022 alone, 612 deliberate attacks on energy facilities were recorded. Ukraine's Energy Minister, Volodymyr Shmyhal, stated that no power plant has been spared. Liudmyla Kutsenko, a resident of Dnipro, described her city plunging into darkness when the power was cut. Oksana Zinkovska-Boiarska emphasized:
"We must say it out loud: we are victims of a Russian war crime!"Andrii Mykheiev characterized the strategy as
"a crime aimed at achieving an unconditional military advantage for the Russian Federation."
The attacks have inflicted colossal damage and suffering on the population. Larisa Samokhvalova shared her anguish:
"We were trying to save ourselves. Putin destroyed our home: the house, the homestead. He destroyed everything! Everything I had burned."Amid these ongoing challenges, Ukrainians continue their fight for survival under brutal attacks and freezing conditions.
The plight of Ukrainians is a direct consequence of a prolonged conflict that has triggered a profound humanitarian emergency. The lack of electricity and heating during winter threatens the lives of thousands, forcing them to find ways to endure in extremely harsh circumstances. This systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure is a recognized violation of international humanitarian law. The international community continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine, calling for an urgent resolution to the conflict and the provision of critical humanitarian aid.
