An unhappy incident occurred in the city of Balta in the Odesa region regarding service. The waiter who served the women refused to switch to Ukrainian, claiming that there are two state languages in Ukraine. This led to complaints from the customers to the police.
Information about this incident was published by journalist Zhanna Savitska on her Facebook page.
Language scandal in Odesa region
In a café in Balta, journalist Zhanna Savitska, together with her friend, ordered coffee but received a response in Russian. After requesting to speak in Ukrainian, the waiter explained that there is no language law and noted the existence of two state languages in Ukraine. This provoked the anger of the women, who turned to law enforcement.
“I decided for myself that, further encountering Russian in service establishments, I will act exactly like this — through the police station. I returned home in a great mood: firstly, with a sense of real involvement in the protection of the language, and secondly, because there is no such brazen Russophilia in service in Kodima. Well, if it happens somewhere else, I know the way to the police station better than in Balta,”— wrote Zhanna Savitska.
Let us remind you that there were similar incidents recently that we reported on, such as the scandal at the concert in Warsaw or the conflict over dog walking in Odesa.
The event in Balta city, where women complained about being served in Russian, caused public outrage and prompted a call to the police. It is important to adhere to the legislation about the state language and respect the language rights of every citizen to avoid similar conflicts in the future.Read also
