Tomahawk or Tomahok: linguist explains the correct pronunciation of the missile name.
According to inkorr.com: While studying the pronunciation of the American cruise missile name Tomahawk, linguist Olga Vasilyeva clarified the difference between transliteration and transcription. She noted that many Ukrainian media and social networks use the name 'Tomahawk', although its transcription from English would be more correct.
"This syllable in the words Tomahawk and Hawking is pronounced the same way, you shouldn't bark. But as it has been accepted: 'Tomahawk' – is not a transcription, but transliteration (letter by letter transmission). In general, this word was borrowed by the English too – the Algonquin Indians had 'tamahak'. But the name of the missile came to us from the English language, so we use transliteration from English, although it would be more correct to transcribe it."
Pronunciation and phonetic transmission
According to the expert, the Ukrainian language mostly operates with transliteration, rather than precise phonetic transmission of words. Therefore, 'Tomahawk' has become widespread in our speech, although linguistically it would be more correct to use 'Tomahok'.
The article discusses how to correctly pronounce the name of the American missile Tomahawk in Ukrainian. The linguist emphasizes the difference between transliteration and transcription, urging the use of correct phonetic transmission of names.
