Linguist on shortened forms of address: why it is important to say mom, not mam.
Opinions of linguists on forms of address in the Ukrainian language
According to inkorr.com: Olga Vasylyeva, a linguist, shared her thoughts on the use of shortened forms of address in everyday communication and the film industry. She emphasized the importance of preserving the vocative case in the Ukrainian language. This topic was discussed in the 'Linguistic Question' section on the 'Glavkom' website.
She noted that shortened forms of address, such as 'mam', 'tat', or 'ba', are characteristic of conversational style, but it is better not to use them in written communication. Olga Vasylyeva emphasized: although it may seem like an economy of linguistic effort, it is important to use Ukrainian forms of address and the vocative case.
We need to understand a simple thing: in conversational style, almost anything goes, and if someone finds it convenient to address someone briefly, there will be 'mam', 'Petya', and 'Kolya', rather than 'mamo', 'Petryku', 'Mykolo', - explained the linguist.
Overall, the discussion showed that the issue of using shortened forms of address in the Ukrainian language raises a lot of reflections among specialists. At the same time, it is important to preserve and popularize Ukrainian language traditions, including forms of address.
The problem of shortened forms in addressing emphasizes the deep interdependence between language and culture. The actualization of the vocative case and its use can contribute not only to better understanding in communication but also to strengthening the linguistic identity of Ukrainians. Whether this will become a new trend in the language environment or remain at the level of conversations depends on the awareness of each of us in using the Ukrainian language.
