Ukraine Issues Travel Warning for Hungary Following Bank Asset Seizure and Citizen Detentions.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Advisory
According to TSN.ua: The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a recommendation for its citizens to avoid travel to Hungary. This advisory, published on March 6, 2023, cites the detention of seven Ukrainian nationals and the seizure of state bank assets in Budapest as the primary reasons.
Incident in Hungary
On March 5, Hungarian law enforcement intercepted two armored vehicles belonging to Ukraine's Oschadbank. The vehicles were transporting a substantial consignment of assets, including $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kilograms of gold. The seven Ukrainian bank employees accompanying the shipment were detained, and their current status and whereabouts remain unknown. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has characterized the incident as an act of state terrorism and racketeering.
In light of these events, the Ministry states it cannot guarantee the safety of Ukrainian citizens in Hungary given what it describes as the arbitrary actions of Hungarian authorities. These developments raise significant security concerns for any Ukrainians considering travel to the country.
This situation underscores the heightened tensions between Ukraine and Hungary, a NATO and EU member state, which could adversely affect bilateral relations. The travel advisory highlights serious risks for Ukrainian nationals abroad and is a critical consideration for anyone planning a trip to Hungary in the near future.
