According to Novyny.live: In a move to revitalize natural habitats, the team from Rewilding Ukraine has released a herd of 12 water buffalo onto Bilorod Island in the Odesa region. This initiative is part of a broader project to restore natural processes in the Danube Delta, where these large herbivores are expected to play a crucial role in boosting local biodiversity. The Danube Delta is one of Europe's most significant wetlands, and such rewilding efforts are key to its long-term health.

The introduction of water buffalo follows previous releases of red and fallow deer on the same island. These combined actions are designed to support the ecosystem by improving natural conditions for a wide range of plant and animal species. Known as 'ecosystem engineers,' water buffalo can positively shape their environment by grazing on vegetation and creating new water channels through their movement.
