Current Situation Along the Belarus Border

According to UATV: As of May 31, 2023, Ukraine's Army General Mykola Malomuzh stated in an interview with the FREEДOM TV channel that no significant military concentrations capable of threatening Ukraine are currently present on Belarusian territory. He emphasized that Ukrainian forces continue to detect small sabotage and reconnaissance groups operating within three to five kilometers of the border.

Earlier, around two thousand troops were stationed near the frontier. However, Malomuzh noted that

“two thousand people is not enough force to conduct offensive operations”
. The general stressed that there is currently no buildup of strategic forces or assets within Belarus. He added:
“I see no conditions for large concentrations, particularly of Belarusian troops, to appear near the Ukrainian border”
.

Sabotage and Reconnaissance Units

The sabotage and reconnaissance groups observed from the Ukrainian side consist of 40 to 50 personnel, and in some cases, reach battalion strength. Mykola Malomuzh commented on this, saying:

“We are monitoring the activity of sabotage and reconnaissance units linked to Belarusian special services”
. Thus, while the threat from the Belarusian side is not currently critical, surveillance of these groups continues.

A key takeaway is that the situation along the Belarus axis remains under Ukrainian military control, and no substantial threats from Belarus have been identified so far. Nevertheless, the activity of these sabotage and reconnaissance teams suggests possible attempts to destabilize the border area, requiring close attention from Ukrainian security forces. Given the ongoing regional military context, monitoring these units will stay a top priority for Ukraine's army.
