A Hero of the Battle of Kruty, Ivan Losky, Honored at Lychakiv Cemetery.
Commemorating Ivan Losky
According to Novyny.live: A flower-laying ceremony and memorial service were held at the grave of Ivan Losky, a participant in the Battle of Kruty, at Lychakiv Cemetery. This event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of historical memory and the heroism displayed by Ukrainian defenders in the struggle for independence.
In 1918, Ivan Losky was among those who fought against a five-thousand-strong Bolshevik army at the Kruty railway station. Several hundred Kyiv students and cadets attempted to hold back the enemy. Although the battle ended tragically, these Ukrainian defenders bought crucial time for the signing of the Brest-Litovsk peace treaty. In the aftermath, 27 captured young men were executed by firing squad.
Contemporary Challenges and the Memory of Heroes
Brigadier General Valentyn Ostryzhnyi, Deputy Commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, who was present at the event, stated:
'We must remember Kruty because today we again face a threat. Our warriors are courageously defending the land, protecting independence and the future of our children.' Valentyn Ostryzhnyi
His words underscore the importance of remembering past heroes in the context of the modern challenges confronting Ukraine. The Battle of Kruty is a foundational event in Ukraine's 20th-century fight for statehood, and its memory resonates deeply today.
Honoring the memory of Ivan Losky and other participants of the Battle of Kruty is a vital element of national identity and the collective memory of the Ukrainian people. This event not only recalls the heroism of past generations but also serves as a potent contemporary symbol of the struggle for independence, as warriors once again stand ready to defend the country's sovereignty.
The memory of Kruty highlights the continuity of Ukrainians' fight for freedom and reminds present generations of their responsibility to those yet to come.
