Man in Odesa Region Conceals Mother's Death for 18 Months to Collect Pension and Evade Military Service.
Pension Fraud Following Mother's Death
According to TSN.ua: In the Odesa region, a man concealed his mother's death for a year and a half to illegally collect her pension payments and avoid being drafted into military service. According to the investigation, this scheme lasted from June 2024 until October 2025. During this period, the man fraudulently obtained over 72,000 hryvnias.
Legal Charges and Broader Implications
He also exploited a deferment from military mobilization, which was valid until November 2025, an action that has become part of the criminal inquiry. Investigators have formally notified the 48-year-old suspect of the charges against him. He faces allegations under Part 1 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, concerning the misappropriation of another's property through deception, and Article 336, which addresses evasion of military conscription during mobilization.
The crimes he is accused of carry a potential prison sentence of up to five years. This situation has raised concerns about adherence to both legal and ethical standards within society. Cases like this highlight vulnerabilities in social welfare and mobilization systems during wartime. Such exploitation not only harms the state budget but also undermines civic responsibility during a national crisis.
This incident underscores the critical need for robust oversight of social benefit payments and mobilization procedures in Ukraine. Abuse of the system, as seen here, damages public trust and may prompt law enforcement agencies to implement stricter measures to prevent similar crimes in the future.
