New checkpoints with Hungary and Romania to appear in Transcarpathia.
Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba announced the opening of new checkpoints at the border with Hungary and Romania, which will help to offload the existing freight checkpoints. The first to be opened will be the "Luzhanka" checkpoint, where empty trucks will be able to move. This will reduce the load on the only freight checkpoint "Chop - Zahony".
There are also plans to open the "Velyka Palad" checkpoint for passenger transport. Negotiations with Hungary are currently underway on this issue. In addition, it is planned to reconstruct the terminals of the "Uzhgorod" checkpoint to separate freight and passenger vehicles, which will increase the throughput for trucks by 30%. On the border with Romania, construction is also set to begin on a new checkpoint "Bila Tserkva", for which the Romanian side is already completing the construction of a bridge over the Tisza River.
Recently, the USAID project "Economic Support for Ukraine" presented a new design for the largest checkpoint on the border with the EU - "Yahodyn". A new freight terminal is planned to be built here, and additional lanes for transport will be created. It is also worth noting that the company "Ukrzaliznytsia" has already completed part of the work on building the European gauge on the Chop - Uzhgorod section, and the work on the entire width of the railway will be completed by the end of 2024.
