Surveillance Attempt at Anti-Corruption Bureau

According to TSN.ua: The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has confirmed an attempt to install surveillance devices in the office of one of its unit heads. NABU Director Semen Kryvonos stated that the incident, carried out by representatives of another law enforcement body, occurred several weeks ago.

Kryvonos emphasized that the listening equipment was installed without a court order. He clarified that this happened while the head of the unit responsible for investigating corruption in the defense sector was having electrical equipment installed in her office.

'Just a few weeks ago, the head of the unit investigating corruption in the defense sector was having electrical equipment installed. It was then that officers from one of the law enforcement agencies, as we now understand, illegally installed surveillance equipment there without any court decision,' stated Semen Kryvonos.

Implications for NABU's Work

This situation raises serious concerns about the legality of the officers' actions and could have significant consequences for NABU's anti-corruption efforts. NABU is a key agency in Ukraine's fight against high-level graft, often investigating sensitive cases involving powerful figures.

The attempted surveillance of the NABU unit head underscores the critical importance of adhering to legal procedures within law enforcement. Such actions, undertaken without proper judicial authorization, not only violate the law but also risk undermining public trust in the institutions tasked with combating corruption. This incident is likely to trigger further investigations and potential accountability for those involved.
