Ukraine's National Day of Prayer

According to UATV: On February 24, 2023, Ukraine marked its inaugural National Day of Prayer, a solemn occasion dedicated to prayers for the nation and memorial services for those lost. This event held profound significance for Ukrainians, who gathered in cities across the country and abroad to honor the memory of war victims and pray for peace.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska joined thousands of citizens in prayer on Kyiv's Sophia Square. They paid tribute to the fallen, including 21-year-old National Guardsman Illya Batsko, who died on February 24, 2022, defending Rubizhne. His mother, Yana Batsko, stated:

“Our eldest son, a lieutenant in the National Guard's 4th Special Purpose Brigade 'Rubizh,' died in the east of our country defending it.”

Observances Across the Nation

Prayer services also took place on Kyiv's Heroes' Alleys, where people prayed for peace and justice. In Lviv, a moment of silence honored the dead, while in Dnipro, prayers were offered for the medical personnel who have saved over 50,000 military and civilian lives during four years of war. Metropolitan Simeon of Dnipro and Sychoslavsk noted:

“Four years of war have taught us one thing—we have no right to surrender.”

In Odesa, relatives of fallen soldiers gathered at a cemetery to honor the heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine. Olesya Sukhoverkhova, one of the participants, shared her feelings: “It's a difficult date. We haven't known peace for four years now.”

Throughout the day, clergy called for prayer, emphasizing the importance of faith during these trying times. 'We are observing the National Day of Prayer, which I understand is very important for our country at any time, but especially now as we endure this war. It is crucial because only God grants victory, only God grants life, and only God grants hope,' said Father Maksym.

President Zelenskyy underscored the day's importance, declaring: “Putin has not achieved his goals, has not broken Ukrainians, and has not won this war. We have preserved Ukraine, and we will do everything to achieve peace and ensure justice.” The National Day of Prayer has become a symbol of unity and hope for the Ukrainian people during a period of immense hardship. This observance highlights the deep emotional toll of the conflict and the role of collective faith in sustaining national spirit.

The day serves not only to commemorate the fallen but also to underscore the vital importance of unity and mutual support within Ukrainian society during wartime. The observance stands as a testament to the resilience of Ukrainians and their enduring hope for peace.
