Oil-Soaked Birds Found on Black Sea Coast in Tuzly Lagoons National Park.
Birds Contaminated with Fuel Oil Discovered in Tuzly Lagoons National Park
According to TSN.ua: Dead birds, their feathers coated in fuel oil, have been discovered along the Black Sea coastline within the Tuzly Lagoons National Park in the Odesa region. The affected species include the black-necked grebe and the red-throated loon. This incident has alarmed environmentalists, as no official fuel oil spill has been reported in the park's coastal area since May 2025. The Tuzly Lagoons are a vital wetland habitat for migratory birds along the western Black Sea coast.
This is not an isolated event; in recent weeks, conservationists have also reported birds killed by contamination from sunflower oil, highlighting a pattern of serious ecological issues in the region. According to the minutes from a meeting of the Odesa Regional State Administration's commission on technogenic and ecological safety, held on January 27, 2025, environmental agencies are mandated to conduct coastal monitoring to detect such cases.
A Pattern of Environmental Incidents
The situation follows a major disaster in December 2025, when an oil spill in the Odesa Bay resulted in the deaths of over 1,000 birds. Ecologists continue to monitor the area closely to prevent further losses. Ivan Rusev, an environmental expert, suggested a possible source for the current contamination:
"It is likely that the bird found itself in the epicenter of the fuel oil at the beginning of the ecological disaster in the Kerch Strait." – Ivan Rusev
The recurring water pollution and bird mortality in the Black Sea point to escalating environmental challenges that demand an urgent response from authorities and conservation groups. Enhanced monitoring of the ecosystem is critical to prevent further losses of flora and fauna and to preserve the ecological balance of this unique natural area. Implementing robust state-level measures is essential to avert similar tragedies in the future.
