Generators and Fires: What Connection Mistake is the Most Dangerous

According to ТСН: Generators have already become a common attribute for private houses and businesses due to frequent power outages. However, improper connection can lead to serious dangers such as electric shock or fire.

Safe Generator Connection

Expert Andriy Yavorsky points out that a generator can be connected using an extension cord, but only one that meets safety standards. The device should be placed approximately 6 meters away from walls with windows or doors and at least one meter away from a blind wall.

The extension cord for connecting the generator must have double insulation, and the cross-sectional area of the conductors should be at least 2.5 mm². The optimal cable length is about 20 meters.

Grounding and Risks

An important step is grounding the generator's body. For this, a metal rod secured in the ground is used, to which a flexible conductor with a cross-section of at least 6 mm² is connected. A reliable contact between the body and grounding is critically important to prevent dangerous potential during current leaks.

Yavorsky also reminds about the danger of using plug-to-plug type extension cords, which can lead to emergency situations. Such mistakes, unfortunately, happen often. The danger also applies to portable charging stations.

Correct Connections and Recommendations

Correct connection to the internal power grid implies using a backup input system that automatically switches power between the generator and the power grid. This solution should be implemented by a specialist.

If the backup input system is absent, the generator can be connected via an extension cord with a generator plug and a socket block.

The expert also emphasizes that household generators are not designed for continuous operation. After approximately five hours of operation, they should be stopped for at least half an hour. The load should not exceed 80% of the generator's maximum power to avoid overload and extend the lifespan of the device.

Recently, a fire occurred in an apartment in downtown Kyiv due to the explosion of a charging station. Firefighters rescued two people from a neighboring apartment, one of whom was a child.

These incidents highlight the importance of following safety rules when using generators and charging stations. Improper connection can lead to serious consequences, so it is essential to follow all expert recommendations. This is especially relevant in the context of frequent power outages that have become common for many Ukrainians.
