Natalia Mogilevska’s Memories of Being Arrested in the 1990s

According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian singer Natalia Mogilevska has opened up about a shocking incident from the 1990s when she was detained by police alongside a friend due to the friend’s connections with a gangster. The arrest took place while Mogilevska was at a hotel, preparing for a performance where she was set to play Juliet in a production of 'Romeo and Juliet.'

According to Mogilevska, she was sitting on the first floor of the hotel reading a volume of Shakespeare with her friend, who was dating a member of a criminal crew.

“I was arrested in the 1990s. Seriously! I was sitting on the first floor of a hotel, reading a volume of Shakespeare with a friend. And my friend was dating a guy from a gang. They scooped them all up, and I was taken along with them,”
the artist recalled.

An Unexpected Ordeal

During the raid, police arrested the gang members and also took Mogilevska and her friend to the station. However, Mogilevska managed to negotiate their release.

“I arranged for at least me and my friend to be let go. We had nothing to do with that gang,”
she added. The incident became an unforeseen experience for the artist, leaving a lasting impression on her memory.

Mogilevska’s account of her arrest in the 1990s highlights the dangers and complexities of that era, when crime was rampant in Ukrainian society. This period was marked by significant social upheaval, and many people found themselves in precarious situations that could spiral into unexpected consequences, as happened in her case. These personal stories also show how creative individuals tried to hold onto their art even in the most challenging circumstances.
